Pseudoscience on Science
Monday, January 07, 2008
I was watching a television show on the Science channel last night called, Pandemic: Bird Flu. At one point they were talking about the stockpiling of TamiFlu, which is iffy in it's effectiveness of treating the normal flu and how they feared people would demand the drug even if it wouldn't help them. Then they went to commercial and it happened to be a commercial for Kinoki Clinical Foot Pads.
Now as disappointed as I was to see a commercial for pseudoscience on the Science channel, I found the probably unintentional association between the last few sentences in the show and the commercial amusing.

Unrelated to your post, I'm afraid, but I just wanted to say "Thank You" - I've received your gift box of boxes in the post. I thought your theme was great, and I really like the Hello Kitty cosmetics box!

They have a warped sense of humor at discovery institute.

There is something ironic about that commercial being shown on that channel. Still, the channel has to raise money to fund its programs, so they probably have to take whatever advertisers they can get. Besides, how many commercials on any channels are not pseudoscientific, illogical and so on?

I've been wearing Kinoki Clinical Foot Pads on my forehead to get rid of the wrinkles, and you're right -- they don't work.
But it doesn't hurt quite as much any more when I bang my head against the wall at pseudo-science.

Haha I saw these things the other day on Discovery during a Global Warming program.
I guess if you slap enough of these on your body there is no need for your liver or kidneys, eh?

haha, I wonder if they did that on purpose?

Also unrelated - thanks for the link to Runolfr. Very entertaining for an ex fencer like myself.

I found Runolfr through a web search when I was looking to see if anyone had substantiated the claims of Kinoki. It's a pretty neat blog though.

What the hell are Kinoki Clinical Foot Pads? And why are they pseudoscience?

SI, from their website:
How Kinoki Detox Foot Pads® Work
Working quicker than other detox methods and using the natural cleansing power of double distilled bamboo vinegar, Kinoki draws harmful substances out your body. You’ll feel the results right away!
Remove Toxins While You Sleep
Simply place ONE PAD on the SOLE of your FOOT (or a targeted body part such as the shoulder or knee) before going to bed. By morning, the pad will have absorbed toxins accumulated in your body, turning the white pad to a shade from gray to black. Use a fresh pad each night until the color on the pad becomes lighter and lighter when removed in the morning.
They're basically promising to cure everything if you just wear these oversized Kotex pads on your feet.

What I don't understand is this modern idea - or maybe it's not modern at all, I don't know - that your body is this seething cesspool of toxins that must be eliminated, usually in some embarassing, painful fashion.

I completely agree, slut. Why is our bodies that are always attacked in every psuedo-scientific and spiritu-religious claim? We are either sinful and corrupted by carnal desires or our body is broken down and corrupted by the toxins in our environment. Somehow I think the philosophy behind both is related.
