Dog Park January 31, 2009

My first portfolio assignment for the photography class was "Spring Fever". There wasn't much instruction, just take pictures and use that as the theme. So, I bundled up the camera and the tripod and spent a morning at the dog park with my mother-in-law and her two dogs.

The tripod was ditched (and carried) after about 10 minutes. I just couldn't keep up with the action using it. I think it's going to require some getting used to to actually use it for something more than moon shots. A friend let me borrow her monopod, but I'm still finding that I can't get used to using it. I just have to do it and stick with it.

Most of these were taken with a 1/2000th of a second shutter speed, so camera shake wasn't much of an issue.

Shooting fast-moving animals is tricky. It's great practice, though. I can see why you ditched the tripod.

The little black one in the second picture sort of looks like Papi, but with shorter hair!

Good work! These are all nice. Tripods are difficult, I can't say I'm a big fan. But I don't do any night photography like you. At weddings I absolutely have to be mobile. Even during ceremonies where it's dark I prefer to bounce my flash rather than set up a tripod because I can't afford to miss a second!

Chappy: My mom-in-law's dogs are really photogenic too. I'm learning more and more though and that helps.

Mamacita: The puppy was sooo cute. I've only really used a tripod for night shots of the moon and occasionally during dusk when I'm setting up a shot for something specific. But then I'm stuck with a higher aperture, which I definitely like, but it's not always the desired effect.

I think it'd be good to get used to using a tripod more for landscape shots at least, but it just seems so limiting. Of course at first I thought my new camera was limiting and now I can hardly use my old one.

When my dentist is done (assuming he leaves me any money) I have to get a real digital camera. I almost never get my old SLR out, but I do miss the fast shutter speeds.

I love the shot of the dog leaping up.
